Centeredness

 

It was a cool November day. I was travelling from Pune to Ahmadabad. My flight was in the afternoon. Airlines had texted us to be there at airport 3 hours prior to departure time because of rush at the security gates. I thought it was just a way of the airline to push customers be on time. Me and my wife reached the airport 2 hours prior to departure. I realized that airlines was right. There was huge queue at the entrance itself. After entering the gate we found that the queue for baggage drop was also a big one. It took considerable time for us to reach the baggage drop point. After that we stood in the security queue. It was long serpentine line which was moving at a snails' pace. I was getting worried whether we will miss our flight. After nearly half an hour I was near the security gate. Suddenly a man and his compatriots came from no where and broke the queue and went ahead. I confronted the person telling him that all people are standing in the queue and this is not the way. Probably I was little annoyed at his behavior and it was evident on my face. To my surprise he took offence and started using foul language and what not. I remained externally calm but I was angry inside. I did not say  anything seeing the unruly behavior of the person. I cleared the security and reached my wife. She asked me what happened. I just narrated the incidence. But it took me good amount of time to calm down.

On reflection I realized that just before this incidence a young man approached me and requested that as he was late for his flight, he may be allowed to jump the queue. To this request I agreed. But some how I was not able to understand behavior of the other person and his fellow passengers who just jumped the queue without assigning any reason. Probably that triggered in me a righteous anger. Which was evident on my face. I was annoyed / irritated for a considerable amount of time.

What could be a different way of handling this situation remaining calm? How could I have impressed upon him that what he was doing was not correct without getting emotionally disturbed? We face lot of situations like this in our social interactions. What you do to remain calm? I pride myself being self aware and in control of myself but such situations though far and few trigger me, I lose the grounded ness. What is the antidote for this? This may happen on the road when a rowdy driver is cutting you off dangerously. Or at a supermarket where somebody shoves you to break the queue at the cash counter. Or an altercation with coworker . Or an argument with a teenage kid about how she should keep her room. All these situations can become volatile if not handled from space of calm demeanor.

What are your hacks to remain calm and stable in such situations? Is there anything else we can do? Some people may would like to avoid these altogether. But I think we cannot avoid these.

What is required is deep self-awareness and grounded ness. How do we cultivate that? And how can we retain that? Any ideas?   

Jan Chozen Bays MD gives an exercise for centeredness in her book” How to train a wild elephant and other adventures in Mindfulness”.  The exercise she suggests is as follows.

“Become aware of your center of gravity. It is located in the center of the lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel, and midway between the front abdominal wall and the spine at the back. In martial arts this center of gravity is called the hara(in Japanese) or tan tien (in Chinese)

Whenever your mind wanders, bring your attention back to your center of gravity. Try to initiate all physical actions from this spot in your body – whether you’re reaching, walking, bending, and so on. You can even chop food in this way. Let each chop of knife originate in the hara, flow down the arm into hand , into knife, and through vegetable.

Any time you feel off balance, drop your awareness into your center. It will stabilize your body ,mind and heart.”

I think to be grounded means you pay attention to not only yourself but what is going on around you. grounding comes from making decisions based on observation and objectivity. grounding comes through surrendering to what the moment is and what is required. grounding is being able to do nothing if you don't know what to do.   21. It’s basically a case of humility versus bombast.

    Humility submits to the truth, cares about consequences, tries to choose carefully (in truth). Bombast forces lies upon reality, doesn’t care about anything or anyone except their own short sighted agenda, wings it or no brainer all their choices. And fakes things all the time.
    Groundedness is simply knowing what’s truly going on, and picking the best option.This is best done in truth, with concern, and carefully. @Johnny Lee-UK

  23. In my experience, it is possible, but it is very rare. As I practice and also when I teach meditation to others, 90% of our work is focused on being grounded enough so that, when the spiritual energy comes in, we use it well. @Sid Kemp - France

This is the same as what would be called "root" centered consciousness using the model of the human energy body or chakra system as a map for states of consciousness as it refers to being aware of ones physical needs, situation, and basic living.   56. Stop doing anything and everything. Remember the breathing from the beginning? Do that. Learn to breath slowly, consciously. Stop doing what you do. Stop doing anything but breathing. After you did that for 10, 20, 30 seconds… you start doing something. Getting to a calm state of mind is not something you do by running around and by having negative feelings. Calm = Stop Thank you coach.

    Excellent article and illustrations Madhav. I have been trying to work on moving from the center – the hara – lately. It is now my primary focus in training. I have a long way to go before it becomes second nature. It sure feels good though when it happens – more power with less effort due to incorporating body weight and a larger muscle group. By pushing your palms together and holding for 5 to 10 seconds, you give your body “proprioceptive input,” according to Brukner, which “lets your body know where it is in space.” I like this one because it reminds me of tree position in yoga, which is the last of the standing series postures in Bikram yoga. The palm push is like a mini, portable tree position I can pull out anytime to calm down. Thanx for nice post.

  63. Superman pose is basically the full Locust position (airplane position), except the arms and the hands are stretched out in front of you, not to the sides. You lie on your belly on the floor and extend your arms in front of you. At the same time, you extend your legs behind you and hold them straight out. Hold that pose for 10 seconds. It’s a great exercise if you are groggy, overexcited, distracted, or antsy. You have provided very useful information to improve stress in day to day life. Thank you.

  78. Coach you are doing a wonderful job of awareness through blog.From grounding comes embodiment. Through sensation-perception functions of looking, listening, touching, moving, smelling, tasting-- these sensory experiences in the process are the best example of good grounding. When grounding is enriched by behavioral and emotional in the body, the person must relay the experience to the other to achieve full grounding. Hence, the other’s reception enhances the dialog, and the process can continue on and on.

  80. The best technique I use to control myself in difficult situations is that I give a thought - “why am I fussed over this issue? Is this so important that it will eat up some of my precious minutes in my life. Is it really that important to be angry or get frustrated over a situation like this. Then I say to myself, definitely its not worth.” And then I virtually minimize that ‘topic' in my brain to the limitless and endless happiness/bliss that I have in life just like in a computer, you minimize a window to do some other work.EXCELLENT Article.

  116. Recently, something happened to me at work. Thank goodness I meditate for at least 20 minutes every day as soon as I wake up in the mornings. The meditation saved me from stewing mad for the next 6 hours, as surely would have happened in the past. Instead, an hour later, I rate my frustration level at the offending person as a 3 (out of 10 with 10 being very angry). Your blog is wondeful.

    what you said is almost every person faced at least once in a life time, you can change how you choose to view the situation. It is a process that takes hard work. Dealing with sadness, anger, frustration, and disappointment is tough business. " why this person behave like this ? " i always asks this question to myself when i face any bitter incidence, events, thoughts and this prevent me from bad opinions, reactions which help a lot to handle the situation , ofcourse but on cost of own suffering.
