This was the photo I took, from back
balcony of my house. My building is situated on the bank of a river, although
the river does not have much water. The dam constructed on upstream of river, has made it dry. During rainy season, when the dam is full, some water is
released to ease pressure on the dam, which flows in the river. Then many birds, start arriving in the vicinity of this water. This painted stork was nearly
half km away from my balcony when I took the shot with my telephoto lens. I
took the picture and cropped the unnecessary portion around the bird. And I was pleasantly surprised to see the reflection of
the bird in the poodle. The reflection was captured unknowingly and I felt
happy about it. A chance seeing of the bird and its photograph made me happy.
I remembered an article in the Sunday
Times of India by Ravi Venkatesan about chance and luck. He states that chance
plays an important role in our life even though we may not accept it. He says
that the place where you take birth, your parents, determine lot of things in
your life- from your schooling, your friends, your education to your job.
Pretty true. This fact starkly hit me when I looked at the photograph.
Few days earlier I have seen a video
in which Rajiv Bajaj the Chairman of one of the biggest two wheeler makers in India
,wherein he says that life is a game of
chance. The transcript of this is available here. ( https://www.outlookbusiness.com/the-big-story-1/lead-story-8/where-you-are-placed-in-life-is-just-luck-6305).
He narrates a story of how his great grandfather who belonged to a very poor
family was adopted by a wealthy man passing by in their ancestral village. He says that “Truly, the circumstances are
much bigger than us. The whole talk of “I have done it’. This is mine is wrong. Where you are placed in life is just luck. Of
course, within that how you conduct yourself is important but minor detail. If
I had to reason why I am where I am , I could talk of lineage ,heritage,
father, great grandfather, Harvard degree, meritocracy and all of that but it
would be rubbish. I am here because my great grandfather was playing marbles in
the courtyard one hot afternoon and somebody wealthy happened to pass by. That
is how the family came into wealth. It was a reality check and it grounded me.”
Definitely chance plays a major role
in our life. But how do we utilize that is completely dependent on us. With the
given things, how we maximize our potential and grow ourselves in all
dimensions of life is left to us. When I say chance or luck plays a major role,
am I suggesting to become fatalistic? No. It is just a reality check about what and who
we are. What do you think?
I am sure many readers will disagree
about the post. They may feel that it is an attitude of fatalism. What I would
like to emphasize that being aware of the role chance plays in life , makes one
humble and grounded. It does not mean that we should be exhilarated or
disappointed by the chance thrown at us. We should have a reality check and
move forward.
With the above photo I could have
congratulated myself about the photography skills I have acquired in a short
time. But instead, it reminded me of the chance because of which I was able to
capture the reflection of the bird in the poodle.
What do you think what role chance
plays in life? What you do, to
capitalize on that? Or rather, how do you prepare yourself, so as to receive this
kind of opportunities or chances. Do let me know.
“As the Arabs say the nature of the rain is
same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens.”
Father Anthony DeMello in Awareness.
I totally agree. ‘Happenstance’ is the word, which describes a convergence of events that results in a positive outcome. Some actor/s may appropriate the outcome as the result of their own efforts, but is it? The opening up of economy in 1991 was a’happenstance’ of how PVNR was chosen as the PM, and coming together of MMS, a bunch of brilliant bureaucrats, who had already done a lot of policy groundwork for the political masters to implement.
ReplyDeleteYes Happenstance is the right word. Totally agree with your thought.
DeleteI think this approach of giving some importance to chance is right ,more because it keeps one grounded and not take all the credit or discredit for the results
ReplyDeleteIt plays a large role in life. Success is mostly about managing chance. Nice blog and interesting posts, Thanx Ashwini to help me find out coach for a life. @Will Jones - Yorkshire, UK

ReplyDeleteNo one thing determines your life. It is a combination of chance and choice. Many people are uncomfortable with uncertainty. For those it’s easier to rationalize that there is no chance. Others will recognize what aspects of their life they can control and deal with chance as best they can without fear. Superb Blog!!! @Gerry Sankara -Lived in New Jersey
ReplyDeleteOur understanding of the world around us is imperfect, and when dealing with chance, our brains tend to come up with ways to cope with the unpredictable nature of our world. Awesome writer, thanx. @Péter Tamas - London
ReplyDeleteResilient people manage to get their lives back on their desired track after adverse events and also adapt constructively to unexpected opportunities. Those are the 'successful' people. The people who run the world. They use their intelligence and knowledge of the likely consequences of certain behaviors and choose wisely. Sometimes things don't work out, but often they do, but either way thoughtful decision-making -- or its absence -- makes the difference. What more do you need to know? Thank you for a woderful blogger referal link. @James Short - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
ReplyDeleteChance plays a major role, period. Whether it's success or in success, wealth and poverty, life or death. Consider this: you have more chances to win the lottery than to be born. Talk about chance! @Stefan Maier - Seattle, Washington, USA
ReplyDeleteIf you're the kind of person who likes to stay on the safer side of things, you might not think that there are many reasons to take a chance. I used to think this way until I realized that I couldn't live my entire life without taking any risks. Over time, you'll realize that there are many important reasons to take a chance and become more comfortable with the idea of it. ReplyDeleteWe believe an outcome is due, and that chance will self-correct. The problem with this view is that nature doesn’t have a sense of fairness or memory. We only fool ourselves when we mistakenly believe that independent events offer influence or meaningful predictive power over future events. Excellent blog. @Bob Leclair- San Francisco
ReplyDeleteI would like to answer it in a simple form. If time t is present, then t-1 is past and t+1 is future. Always t is real and t-1 and t+1 are just in our imaginations. When you think of chances, you refer to t+1 becoming t. t+1 is influenced by t-1. So chances depend on t-1 and t+1 and its influences. Thanx for wonderful writing. @James Marshall- Lives in Launceston, Tasmania
ReplyDeleteChance determines our lives by being a part of our decision-making process. If I calculate that my chance to succeed is good, I'm more likely to decide in favor of making the attempt. If I calculate that my chance to succeed is poor, I'm less likely to decide in favor. Fantastic work my friend blogger. @Gayle Laakmann McDowell - Lives in Palo Alto, CA
ReplyDeleteThe people that succeed in life are prepared for those chances when they occur. They have studied for years, practiced for decades and continually try new method after new method, always searching for the right answer/method/solution/etc. Finally when they stumble upon something that works, it just seems like luck and chance but there was really a lot of work put in behind it. ReplyDeleteI see chance as a mental calculation. In some cases, it is possible, by using math, to determine, with great precision and certainty, exactly what chances are. If one cuts a deck of cards, there's one chance in fifty two that it will be the ace of spades: not great odds, or something that I would want to bet my life on. Great post. Thank you dear blogger. @Misha Yurchenko - Yorkshire
ReplyDeleteWe can all take back control by not blaming chance, fate, or anyone else for our outcome. It’s within our ability to cause everything to change. Excellent blogger!!! @Warrick Low - Lives in Singapore
ReplyDeleteChance is the product of entropy, the natural tendency of the universe to move toward disorder. It's random, and it's a major player in everyone's life. How you handle the various things that chance throws at you is, of course, a matter of choice. Wonderful writer. @Mark Stephen Houston - Lives in McMinnville, Oregon

ReplyDeleteSometimes I use to think that life is by choices because sometimes in mine I choose different options I don't know what will be the result but I choose what's much comfortable or where am I happy. ReplyDeleteOne of the more obvious reasons to take a chance is that the outcome is always a surprise. Although there is a chance that taking a risk can end badly, you'll never know if there could have been some really great outcomes too! And I don't know about you, but the constant question of "what could have happened?" always nags at me if I don't take the chance. thank you for a wonderful post. @Sean Kernan- Florida

We need to allow the room for chance. I like your blog. @Nathan - Swedan
ReplyDeleteWe need to stop pretending that we can immunize ourselves against chance events. We also need to curb our enthusiasm for long-term plans, and devote more time to recognizing that chance events present both unexpected threats and opportunities. We need to spend more time developing the skills of opportunity awareness or luck readiness, so that we can be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that chance provides. Very beautiful writing skill of writer. Thank you Ashwini. @Neil - Sweden
ReplyDeleteLets occasionally take some time and reflect on our choices, the factors that led to them and not just the outcomes. Let’s give ourselves a pat on the back when we do well and focus on extracting learnings when we don’t, while allowing the room for chance so that we can keep ourselves grounded and focussed. Excellent post.

How do you know if you’re dealing with chance? A good heuristic is to ask yourself if you can lose on purpose. If you can’t, you’re likely far into the chance side of the skill vs. luck continuum. No matter how hard you practice, the probability of chance events won’t change. Superb writing of writer. Thank you . @Daniel -Yorkshier

ReplyDeleteOne of life's greatest gifts comes when we realize we have the power to make our own choices and therefore direct our lives. Yeah! We can direct our lives into what we want but the big question why there are wrong decisions or wrong effects in choosing what will be your life after choosing what you want. You are great writer. ReplyDeleteChance usually plays a leading role in the drama of life. Your blog posts read and found wonderfully articulated. Thank you so much for knowledge sharing. This is new to me the Life Coach concept. @Jef- Caracas, Venezuela
ReplyDeleteI have been researching the role of chance events in people's lives for a decade and a half, and study after study show the same thing. Between two thirds to 100 per cent of those surveyed report that chance events have significantly impacted their lives. Despite the majority of us having been so influenced, collectively we suffer from a form of amnesia and act as though our lives are more predictable than they really are. ReplyDeleteThere is chance and choice. Humans can choose much of their path in human organizational life such as work, family etc. Some choice can affect health or well being. However, one’s genetic makeup is not a choice. It is chance. DeleteWe only get this one life to live so why not live it up, right? It is scary to think about the bad things that might come from you taking a chance but, sometimes, it is even scarier to think about living your life without taking chances or risks. ReplyDeleteThe very origins/beginnings of our lives is solely determined by chance: who we are born to; where we are born; when we are born; the “what” or how we are born, meaning innate personality traits, intelligence, health, height, looks…Then, for the next decade or so, our lives are determined, governed & directed by our caregivers/caretakers, or guardians making the decisions for our well being or lack there of…Choices, we individually make, become more and more determining of our direction, destinies, and/or fates as we develop and grow more and more independent. It's superb writup. @Michael J. Tran- Lived in New York City Worked at Race Car Driving
ReplyDeleteWell chance means luck, an opportunity, a random occurrence. I dunno if chance determines our lives but if it does, it could either be good or bad. ReplyDeleteTo taking greater chances than that: the human emotion hardest to kill is hope. It's not rational, sometimes it's against all odds, but we still have it. Probably has to do with survival. Sometimes, if we see the teeniest chance/hope for something we'll go for it. Why else would we buy lottery tickets? Someone always wins it, right? Thanx for a wonderful post. @Paula D. Tozer - Lives in New Brunswick
ReplyDeleteClearly our lives routinely involve both the expected and the unexpected, and anyone who thinks every jot and tittle of their life is predestined by some anthropomorphic god or another, has no use for a brain at all since they think (metaphorically) that there is nothing they can do to change their life script. And those who think that they can control every aspect of their life will be frequently disappointed by reality. So ultimately, chance -- unpredictable events -- are opportunities to take advantage of or to screw up. DeleteThe “wise” do NOT believe in “chance” Pls tell web link so that want to know about what exactly coaching is this. Thank you. @Franciszek - Poland
ReplyDeleteYes wise do not believe in chance. But appreciate it and remain grounded to take further action.
DeleteChance occurance and fate are easily intertwined because both of these deal with something happening unexpected or not planned.
ReplyDeleteMan is destined to reap the benefits of his actions, be it good or bad. Man by nature has the tendency or inclination not to accept his faults or mistakes..
When fault or bad action react on the life, man find ' fate' as lame excuse and if the result turns out to be good ,then it is luck, coincidence or hard work..
Accepting chance or fate helps man to stay humble realising that some happening cannot be controlled by man.
" Whatever can happen will happen"... Accept it and explore the possibilities to develop beyond adversity...

ReplyDeleteThe problem is we think we have time, work like as it is your last chance. Thank you. @Carter- Bucharest, Romania
ReplyDelete"We don' t live for once. We live everyday rather we die only once".Everyday ,a new dawn awaits for us to make the change we wish to see in the world. Everyday has to offer something new and novel . Everyday a new opportunity knocks our door to make the rest of our life the best of our life. Everyday we can start a new ,unless we change our perspective towards the way we tend to look at life. We should therefore ,rather not kill ourselves everyday by not living the way we want to live . We should ,take the plung to build our life the way we want it to be!!! Thank you coach for a wonderful blog. Is any podcast you have ? pls share. @Dixon - Bogota, Colombia
ReplyDeleteLife is less about luck and more about a set list of events that will always happen. ‘Luck’ is a convenient word we use to excuse our own failings and successes. Thank you. @Fletcher - Copenhagen, Denmark
ReplyDeleteOur most direct observations show us clearly that this cosmos is driven by a set of very strict natural laws that must necessarily consist of a million+ variables that all run in some mysterious synchronicity allowing for randomness at the same time. We observe a good measure of determinism and also a some measure of in-determinism. So this makes it impossible for us to predict what is to come with any level of accuracy. We can only play with probabilities. We see that there is a perfect balance in the cosmos at all times. This overall balance must necessarily negate individual free will on the parts of the constituents of the cosmos. Thank you writer . @Kennedy- Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
ReplyDeleteIt appears that we have choices at every fork. In this appearance we are making a conscious choice at every fork. However a diligent analysis will show us all the causes that led to the specific choice being made! Thanx a ton dear. @Osborne -Anchorage, Alaska, USA
ReplyDeleteLife is full of options or choices, but also life has full of chances. Life is full of surprises and we don't know what will happen next. We don't know if the decisions we make are for your good or not. But there's one question is life by choosing what you want will happen or is life a destiny? Is life a choice or by chance? @ Quintrell - Budapest, Hungary
ReplyDeleteLive life to the fullest even if you believe it's by chance or by choice. The important is how you run your life. Life is full of surprises, mysteries and challenges. Life is by chance because some things are meant to happen to you to teach you how to value life also life is a matter of choice because decision making is part of each other life and choosing or directing your life is the power of every human being. Thank you. @Walsh - Helsinki, Finland
ReplyDeleteThe truth is those possibilities are always within your reach. every day contains within it countless opportunities, all dictated by the choices you make. Nice blog thank you. @Zouch- Poland
ReplyDeleteLife is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” ~Denis Waitley
ReplyDeleteSometimes in life when luck favours us, all the steps we take fall at right place, however if luck is against us, all the steps go against us. Wonderful post. @Stewart-Dublin, Ireland
ReplyDeleteIn reality, each one of those sequences has the exact same probability of occurring. This is a misconception of chance. Thanx for the woderful writer. @Quimby- UK
ReplyDelete‘Choice’ is more likely, as this the way most of us see life. We choose what to do, and this creates changes in our lives. You are awesome writer. I am sure for awesome Life Coach. @Marshall-La Paz, Bolivia
ReplyDeleteThe Game of Life is a game of random chance that requires a bit of skill too. It is safe to say that the Game of Life is a game of both luck and skill. Thank you dear writer. @Griffin - Sydney
ReplyDeleteIf each one of us were to reflect on the role chance played in their lives, we would find that in many cases, the most important developments in our life had some random element that made a pivotal difference. excellent post. @Connelly - Harare, Zimbabwe
ReplyDeleteEnormous role that chance plays in our life, we try our very best to render it invisible. We focus instead on what our efforts have yielded. Our will, our efforts, the capabilities that we have built- all the science and technology that we conceived of, the art and culture that we have extracted from the wild and raw fibre of life. And it certainly is true that human endeavor has given us far more control over the trajectory of our lives than what was the case a few generations ago. Thanx for the fabulous writer. @Sullivan - Detroit, Michigan, USA
ReplyDeleteIt is important to acknowledge the role that chance plays in our life rather than try and deny it using whatever strategy that we favour.Excellent blog thank you. @Bexley- Jerusalem, Israel
ReplyDeleteThe gambler’s fallacy implies that when we come across a local imbalance, we expect that the future events will smoothen it out. We will act as if every segment of the random sequence must reflect the true proportion and, if the sequence has deviated from the population proportion, we expect the imbalance to soon be corrected. Superb blog and writing skill. @Abigail - UK
ReplyDeleteThank you for statistical perspective.

ReplyDeleteAn opportunity presents itself, but you are the only one to see it because of your unique perspective. That perspective was formed by the sum total of all of your unique knowledge, experiences, skills. Others may also have seen the same opportunity, but failed to recognize it because they could not comprehend its significance. Chance is the flash of brilliant insight that occurs — the “a ha” moment that you get because you were able to put things together in a unique way in order to recognize the good fortune. Wonderful blogger, if you have any web pls share the link. @Yasmin - Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
ReplyDeleteYou must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change.@Zadie- Yorkshier
ReplyDeletePrince Hamlet spent a lot of time pondering the nature of chance and probability in William Shakespeare’s tragedy. In the famous “To be or not to be” speech, he notes that we helplessly face “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” — though a little earlier in the play he declares that “there’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow,” suggesting that everything happens because God wills it to be so. @Dan Falk - Poland
ReplyDeleteThank you for bringing in Shakespeare here. He portrays human predicament superbly.
DeletePure chance, absolutely free and blind, at the very root of the stupendous edifice of evolution: This central concept of modern biology is no longer one among other possible or even conceivable hypotheses. Thank you for nice blog. @Viola- Poland

ReplyDeleteOne of the most frequent complaints of adults is boredom. Do you live the same day over and over? The time flies by because there’s nothing to differentiate one day from the next. There are no victories or defeats, just the dullness that comes from monotony. So I am always in a search to take chance. Thanx dear. @Xylo-Swedan

ReplyDeleteTaking chances can be scary, but ask yourself what you have to lose. Whether it’s approaching someone attractive or sending your resume to your dream company, what do you have to lose? Most risks have little potential for real loss. The threat is inside your head. Thank you writer. @ Elon - Melbourn

ReplyDeleteTake your chances. Just consider not trying too hard. Consider not "living up to expectations". And make sure, as I did with my family, to manage your personal risk, because taking chances implies the possibility of failure and failing in some thing is just that.Thanx for the chance given for coment on your blog post. @ Rodriuges - Zhurich
ReplyDeleteWhat if ... all your efforts were worth every second because you will do something positive with it in the future ... Thanx @Sam - Zhurich
ReplyDeleteLife is a series of calculated risks – nothing more. Everything that you decide to do has a margin of risk. No outcome is ever 100 percent certain and, therefore, any attempt at anything has a chance of complete failure. We risk everything, every day of our lives without knowing it. There is always a chance that walking outside will kill us. Thank you so much writer. @Helena-Vienna
ReplyDeleteThere’s a chance that we’ll never make it to our destination, a chance we won’t get to see our loved ones again, a chance that tomorrow will never come. Life is all about risks – you take some and you avoid others. Thanx a ton dear. @Smith - Winnipeg, Manitoba,Canada
ReplyDeleteThe life you live depends on the choices you make, the risks you take, and how lucky or unlucky you’ve been. Depending on how lucky you feel you’ll most certainly want to avoid certain risks – like walking across a highway with a blindfold.Thanx@Catherin - Manila,Philippines

DeleteWe too often allow our emotions to get in the way of logic. If you don’t risk failing, then you can’t succeed. Success requires risking failure – that is true 100 percent of the time. Thank you @Charl - Poland
ReplyDeleteAs Everyone answered, Its making a choice when you are uncertain about the result/outcome/consequences. You will never know what will happen unless you do it. Whomever the History portrays as The legends and The great people. All of them took chances. Just because they had that small voice saying inside them that "You Can do it, You MUST do it". This is called Little Faith and You take that chance. Thank you writer. @Marina- Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada
ReplyDeleteWe have to take a chance and believe that it was rightly done. Thank you for a wonderful blog. @Jacquline -Chicago
ReplyDeleteIt means coming out of your comfort zone to do something that a person believes in. Like Gandhi Or Martin Luther King or Mandela. They could have easily led a life being oppressed by tyranny but they chose to take a chance. They chose to fight back staying true to their methods and ultimately, were successful. Nice post thanx @Will-Harare
ReplyDeleteThis is something like when you are having a happy and smooth life and you are getting what ever you need without any hiccups but still you decide to achieve more.
ReplyDeleteWe take chances everyday, but we don't realize because there is very less to lose in those matters. But the point is that chances small or big we are taking them every second. So there is nothing special about taking chances in life. it becomes important only when the stakes are high. Wonderful blog. @Kelvin- Washington
For me taking chances in life is having firm belief that nothing will go wrong..Thanx @Ameli - Madrid
ReplyDeleteWe have firm beliefs about what is going to happen if we do blah blah blah and are therefore safe choices. When we expect something to happen and assign a choice which involves some sacrifice, we call it as unsafe. Accepting that choice we call taking a chance. Awesome blogger. Thank you. @Lima -UK
ReplyDeleteYou take chances when your heart knows that you are gonna make it while your brain is still in a confused state.........you forget the word "fear"........it means you are prepared to try something new and unusual ......it doesn't matter if you succeed or lose.......but if you don't take the chance you desperately wanted to take, you are gonna regret for the rest of your life!! Thanx for referral link @Demello -California
ReplyDeleteIts just like
ReplyDeleteTaking chances to ask such question and taking chance to answer such question. No matter how lame we sound, but we took our chances.
Same is with taking chances in life.
We try to grab oppurtunity present in front of you either by hard work or luck.
Its a idiom.
To take a risk. Thank you dear Madhav. @Catty - Yorkshier
It means doing something even when you might fail. A chance is an uncertainty, and a lot of people won't try something unless they are assured of success.@Carole Unter -UK
ReplyDelete“ Chance” is understood by different people diferently. STatisticians and Mathematicians may consider a one-in -a million chance also as relevant for certain purposes, while someone who is risk averse may consider even a one in in four chance as no chance at all. Thank you Madhav @Martina -Philadelphia
ReplyDeleteTaking a chance ,in ordinary meaning indicates action that is against the Common trend. Thanx @Zen - Cabuyao,Philippines
ReplyDeleteNot to be simplistic, but think about it, if you don’t take chances, you will never accomplish anything. I learned to ski in Junior High. I never became a good skier as I was too afraid of falling, and wouldn’t take chances.
ReplyDeleteThat happens in a lot of things in life, if you are not willing to take chances, you are never going to learn anything.
@James Houges -Budapest Hungary
My whole life I never wanted to do or accomplish anything. Is something wrong with me? @Harry - Vienna
ReplyDeleteFirst of all would like to welcome you in wildlife photography world. The tone (brightness) of the water is showing established different moods in your image. The sharp reflection of this painted stork enlivens the beauty of the frame. The reflection on the still water gives an interesting overall shape to the image. Writer has very nicely elaborated the fact which faces by almost all humans of the earth.
ReplyDeleteLife is indeed a gamble, the ultimate game of chance, based purely upon having the ability to make the right choices at the right time. You never win or lose in life if you realise that it is all just for the experience. I believe in learn to create our own destiny, and i don't have patience for wait to see what fate throws your way. Thank you.
Your writings are simple, clear and down to earth which reflects your mindset. It was really very interesting to read the comments of so many persons, which always present an opportunity for better insight into ourselves.
ReplyDeleteLiterally speaking about taking the photograph, while doing so you must be thinking of doing your best. So the result of your action was achieved even without the thought of the action in particular. This was your true self at that particular moment.
Now if you apply this to the others who got something by chance you will know that deep inside they wished it. Now question is if you wish will you get exactly what you wished for. It is not so. This mostly depends on your past karmas which we do not know so we tend to call it by chance. In reality these past karmas are what we are made up of, some on the upper surface and some deep inside us. What will come forth can not be reflected by us so as commented by Ashwini earlier I also try to make my own destiny and try not to get attached to the result of my action .
My good wishes to you.
Thank you for a detailed comment. I liked the way you nicely connected the karma theory with chance.
